Gillette College Foundation’s Scholar Spotlight!
Meet Tyler Harpenau, recipient of two Gillette College Foundation Scholarships: the Energy City Voices Booster Club Scholarship, and the Florence T. Young Memorial Scholarship.
Tyler comes to us from a farm in Omaha, Nebraska, where he was involved in musical theatre, play production and the business program at Creighton University. When Energy City Voices performed at his school, he knew it was something he had to be a part of.
Tyler is currently majoring in business, specifically entrepreneurial studies. His next step is a four year university to complete his business degree and is entertaining the idea of a bachelors in fine arts or some sort of musical theatre emphasis. His 10 year goal is still being developed, but he has no doubt his future includes music. Ultimately, he wants to change the music industry and hopes to work with copyright laws and making the reproduction of music more affordable to directors and performers while still giving the appropriate credit to the original songwriter/producer. He is also considering a recording studio where he can produce music, or taking his chances out on the road trying to make a musical name for himself!
The scholarships Tyler has received have allowed him to focus on his school work and Energy City Voices, rather than getting a job. This also allows him to enjoy the events and opportunities the campus offers. Tyler feels when you receive scholarships to pay for your education, it is your duty to give yourself back to the campus that gave to you.
His time at Gillette College has taught him about scheduling and time management. Tyler wants to let other students know they should apply for all kinds of colleges and all kinds of scholarships. He also wants them to remember, “There will always be people to help you who want you to fit in.”
Tyler’s favorite thing about being a Gillette College student has been the professors and their open door policy. He is especially appreciative of how everyone works around the schedules of students involved in sports and activities. He enjoys the one-on-one connections and ability to actually know each other. He feels Gillette College is the best fit for him for this reason.
Congratulations on receiving your scholarships, Tyler Harpenau. The Gillette College Foundation is proud to have you as a recipient!
